Cora Rupp creates monotypes in exuberant colors and an abstracted style. “Bring Lots of Flowers,” her stunning signature image, is a one-of-a- kind original. Rupp’s own description of the monotypes is that they are color-saturated, richly patterned ideas found at every turn. In Cora’s words, “That’s just the way these happen. I find collected bits of observation of pattern, color and shape everywhere; a sun-drenched wall, pattern on an old pitcher, stripes anywhere they appear, gorgeous old oriental rugs, corners of rooms, and of course, botanical color and shape. Then, I pull all of them together to find a totally new interior scene. These would be called still lifes but I consider them as wonderful discoveries, beautiful spaces that never appeared before.”
So, what is a monotype or monoprint? The initial work is done on a printing plate with oil etching inks applied with brush and brayer. Starting with a single color, Rupp allows the print to evolve with spontaneity in both color and form resulting in a rich and fresh look. After the painting is done on the plate, paper is placed on the well plate and run through a press, transferring the entire painting onto the paper (hence mono or one-print). From here, the process becomes unique: after the print dries, the artist works back into the print; drawing and painting with three or four additional layers of color. Until the final brushstroke, the work is evolving and sharing these discoveries is always a privilege, explains the artist. The lush colors are reminiscent of Matisse; here’s your chance to get a Cora Rupp!
Since dividing her time between Northern Virginia and Hilton Head, Cora has become active in the art community here both teaching and creating art. Rupp’s work is represented in numerous private, corporate and institutional collections nationwide.
