About the Walter Greer Gallery
In 1971, a group of nine people met at the Red Piano Gallery to discuss forming an Art League on Hilton Head Island. Since they wanted to present their idea to as large a group as possible, they scheduled a program in conjunction with an exhibit of Walter Greer's paintings in March of 1972 at the Hilton Head Inn. About thirty people showed up, heard the plans, and elected Gretchen Ramsey president. The Art League was off and running!
Today, the Art League has over 500 members, and boasts supporting two centers: The Walter Greer Gallery in The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, and The Art Academy on Cordillo Parkway. Both are located on Hilton Head Island.
In October, 2010, the Art League of Hilton Head moved it's gallery from the Pineland Station into The Walter Greer Gallery in The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina. Moving into the Arts Center was a logical choice. Taking over the Walter Greer Gallery space felt like "coming home," having Walter Greer be an integral part of its historical beginnings.
The gallery, located at 14 Shelter Cove Lane and is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM, and from 6:30-8Pm on days of performance as a rule, but can vary throughout the season and/or due to private exhibits. It is always best to check the calendar. Each month, the gallery showcases over 100 new works provided by our members, both in 2D and 3D mediums. The change of show occurs the first of each month, followed by an opening reception during the same week. Each reception provides complimentary hors d'oeurves and beverages and is open to the public. It is generally from 5-7 p.m. where you can meet the artists in person, other artist members, staff and some of our Board members.
In addition to our regular monthly exhibits, a featured artist is showcased. A variety of artists' works are represented throughout the year displaying paintings and photography, as well as 3-dimensional arts such as ceramics, weaving, jewelry, and sculptures. The Art League of Hilton Head also offers off-site exhibits in different locations on the island where you can view and purchase our members' works. Currently we offer off-site exhibits at:

A large variety of special events and fundraisers are offered throughout the year for both members and the community. In addition, the Art League of Hilton Head hosts the Gullah Celebration public exhibit in February and looks forward to providing other exciting public exhibits in 2012.
