Four Part Harmony - Vickie B Ebbers, Judy S McElynn, Barbara Snow & Kathy Tortorella
September 10, 2009 --
Four Part Harmony at Art League Gallery
Four local artists with diverse histories that include works in watercolor, print and clay come together to present a body of work entitled Four Part Harmony at the Art League of Hilton Head Gallery Oct 13 - Nov 7. The opening reception is on Tue, Oct 13, 5-7pm in the Pineland Station Atrium, Hilton Head Island.
Award winning artists Vickie Ebbers, Judy McElynn, Barb Snow & Kathy Tortorella join forces to exhibit an unusual group effort. "We chose to work in pastel and oil for this grouping," says Judy McElynn. "Pastel being the medium that we ALL had in common. But the comfort zone ends there, each of us had to step outside our normal purview to accomplish the pieces required for this exhibit."
Vickie Ebbers, whose pieces are regularly exhibited by the American Watercolor Society and Southeastern Pastel Society Shows, was the key force behind the show's theme. "The Lowcountry has so many fine artists; we were challenged to establish a distinctiveness in our show. We have created an exhibit that illustrates the uniqueness of our individual visions yet also unites them in a single piece comprised of four panels, distinguished only by our signature strokes. I think the audience will thoroughly enjoy the show! "
This group of artists, closely allied in philosophy and vision, found it very easy to communicate and agree on a wide range of decisions that needed to be made in preparation for the exhibit; although this comes as no surprise as this group also represents one quarter of the cooperative effort behind of Old Town Bluffton's Maye River Gallery. Kathy Tortorella, known especially for her expansive Lowcountry pastel landscapes that frequently adorn the National Juried Show adds, "The group will further reveal the nature of our partnership during a demo at the atrium outside the Gallery at Pineland Station, Saturday, October 17 at 1pm, where the four of us will create one pastel painting by taking turns at the easel."
"We will also be providing an Osher Educational tour Tuesday October 3, from 1-3 pm," adds Barb Snow, a former art instructor and Board member of the Art League of Hilton Head. Barb has recently added mono print work to the long list of media she has explored. Barb's artist statement readily illustrates her lifelong passion "There is so much to learn in art, to experiment with, to discover, and to enjoy!"
And enjoy you will! - Come to the Art League of Hilton Head Gallery on Tuesday night October 13, 5-7pm for the show's opening reception. The exhibit continues through Nov 7. There is plenty to discover, in this latest experiment by four of the island's foremost artists.
